Scot Goes Pop: the fifth most-read alternative media site in Scotland?

Well, it's been several years since I last did a self-indulgent stats post, so it's probably long overdue.  I spotted that a few hours ago the Indyref2 site had compiled a list of "the top six alternative-media sites" based on traffic estimates from the helpfully-titled Traffic Estimate website. I was a bit surprised that Scot Goes Pop wasn't on it, because I knew from having looked into this subject in the past that this blog has very similar traffic levels to both Wee Ginger Dug and Indyref2. So I punched the Scot Goes Pop web address into Traffic Estimate, and found that, sure enough, it should have been on the list, just below Wee Ginger Dug but ahead of CommonSpace. Assuming nobody else has been accidentally left off, this is the correct top seven -

1) Wings Over Scotland: 215,900 unique visitors in the last 30 days
2) Craig Murray: 128,000 unique visitors in the last 30 days
3) Bella Caledonia: 112,200 unique visitors in the last 30 days
4) Wee Ginger Dug: 75,500 unique visitors in the last 30 days
5) Scot Goes Pop: 74,200 unique visitors in the last 30 days
6) CommonSpace: 59,800 unique visitors in the last 30 days
7) Indyref2: 30,800 unique visitors in the last 30 days

In all honesty I'm a bit sceptical about those figures.  I use Google Analytics, and the figures I get there are significantly less than an average of 74,200 per month.  Admittedly there's some traffic that Analytics doesn't pick up, but even so.  It's also intuitively difficult to believe that CommonSpace, a multi-author site that is updated far more frequently than Scot Goes Pop, and that gets free advertising on the mainstream media of the sort that the rest of us can only dream of, is only in sixth place.  Possibly the above figures are just ballpark estimates with a very wide margin of error.  Nevertheless, I can certainly believe that Scot Goes Pop is at least competitive with the likes of CommonSpace and Bella, which is pretty incredible for a one-man operation.

  1. Your site is definitely one of my first go to places. Well done, and it’s not self indulgent, your readers like to know the stats too.

  2. I go first to Wings, then to ScotgoesPop, then to the Wee Ginger Dug, every weekday without fail. Occasionally I'll look at Craig Murray. I also look at Derek Bateman's blog, but he seems to have stopped writing.

    1. He probably got fed up with people reminding him what the BBC in Scotland is doing, which ISN'T due to hard working, over-pressed "honest" journalists, but is obviously premeditated editorial decisions. He blocked me on Twitter when I raised it with him. Shame really as I think he has lots of good things to say.

    2. I've never understood his seeming naivety on the BBC, but I generally quite enjoy his writing. Perhaps he was just an insider for too long.

  4. My morning routine is Wings, Scotgoespop, Munguin, Wee Ginger Dug, Derek Bateman.

It doesn't surprise me that you have a high readership.

    Congratulations and thanks

  5. I enjoy reading various political websites. The Scottish lot just seem to be crammed with welfare junkies and jock moaners.
As George Galloway said recently, 'where has socialism gone'!
There are no left blogs in Scotland which is surprising when you consider the rich in Scotland have been getting richer year on year since the Jock Parliament commenced running alongside with food banks increasing. The Jock Nat si pretense that they are progressive is gob smacking. Up yer kilts.

    1. GWC2, you can get away with a lot, but you can't get away with pretending that Scot Goes Pop isn't your favourite website. You spend your entire waking existence here.

    2. My best friend has the most dreadfully bad-tempered wee dog. It will bite and snap at anyone who tries to engage with it & my friend has to shout to any approaching weans, 'Don't clap the dug!' It's indulged in a very unsuitable food diet resulting in the foulest of vapours. I'm talking 'dead seal on beach' time.

Yet because I love my friend, I gladly visit & I put up with the dug - in a black humour kind of a way, it's quite amusing.

Feel free to think on this as a wee parable on your wonderful blog, James.

  7. It's good to know that information, James, so thanks for posting it - no, not self-indulgent at all, or not very much, anyway.

I get e-mail alerts when you post,James, or I'd be checking this blog more often - in other words, those e-mail alerts reduce the number of hits I make on this website.

I love your site, and I suppose the resident troll adds a bit of olde-worlde rustic charm, and a touch of the phantasmagorical...

Presume you've taken your findings to the Administrators(s) of the IndyRef site...?

  11. James, I even comment when sleeping... Best laughs ever on your sight... Hard to believe a Tartan Tory would ever resign for sexual misconduct as that was supposed to be the Blue Tory domain.

  13. James, thanks for all your great work as the go-to person for good polling analysis.

If your readers need a quick update on the day's political news from Scotland, my site aggregates all the top feeds - see chap-chap.com - Scot Goes Pop is there of course.

  14. How does this compare with Darren (I took a £5,000 bribe from JK Plagiarist to vote labour, Alcoholic wife-beater and all round cretin) McGarvey's homespun efforts?

  15. Always come to Scot goes POP! And mostly every day. I enjoy both James' articles and his analysis of an opinion poll or an election, By Election etc.

Wings, here, the Dug (Ginger one, not Kez), and strangely Pie and Bovril's (fitba forum) politics section is pretty good reading. Massive majority for Yes over there too - sure when they've done polls its a younger, white Scottish demographic mostly but its been 85% plus yes, IIRC.

Difficult to see where this is going to end up. No deal is my bet and 'Trouble' to return to NI. Maybe you have a different take on it GWC2, whats your opinion?

I hear you, I know "Dont feed the troll". Sorry just trying to get some hopefully reasoned input.

  18. Fantastic! Well done James. I saw your talent shining through when you first took on The Herd all those years ago. I wish that a lot more Scots were like you: tenacious, thorough, principled, dedicated to the well-being of our country, and on the right side of history.
